Asbestos is a mineral that was used extensively in ships and buildings constructed from the late 1800’s to 1978 due to its ability to resist heat, fire, electricity, and chemicals. Asbestos fibers do not have any detectable odor or taste, and they do not dissolve in water or evaporate.
Health effects associated with inhalation and/or ingestion include asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other conditions. No safe level of exposure has ever been documented which means any exposure carries some risk.
